Question: I would like to turn our covered deck into an outdoor room that will feel like an extension of our home for my family. I would like some furniture that is weatherproof, child friendly, and comfortable; but I want it to look more like indoor furniture than outdoor furniture. Do you have any decorating tips to pull this off?

Answer: Today outdoor furniture is available in so many different styles and finishes that you should be able to locate some furniture that will meet all of your needs. Most large furniture stores will have a garden and patio area where they showcase furniture that is weather-resistant and perfect for an outdoor room.

The stiff, uncomfortable cushions of patio furniture of the past are no longer a problem. Fabric for outdoor seating is available in a multitude of patterns and colors, so that you can carry your indoor color scheme outdoors if you would like, Not only is it attractive, it's very soft and comfortable to sit on.

Since your deck is covered, consider laying an inexpensive acrylic rug underneath the furniture on the deck. An imitation oriental can make any deck look exquisite. If you do not have the ceiling of the deck wired for electricity, call in an electrical an see if it would be possible to do so. If so, have the electrician install a ceiling fan with a light on it so that you can enjoy the deck in the evenings as well.
