Question: Our
formal living room is not used on a daily basis and since we
are tight on space in the rest of the house, I would like to make
some changes to the living room to make it a more "practical and usable" space
for my large family. Any suggestions? We have 3 children, ranging in age
from 5 - 10.
Answer: It makes perfect sense to transform your traditional living room space into a multipurpose space, especially if you are overflowing in the rest of the house and find that you are not using a formal living room on a regular basis. One of the nicest homes I've ever seen had a living room converted into a library/study area for the family. The space was still used for entertaining when guests came over, however it was even more homey and stylish than the "formal" living room had been. In this particular living room, a fireplace was added along with adjoining wood bookshelves (floor to ceiling) built in on both sides of the fireplace. Two comfortable overstuffed chairs, ottomans and an overstuffed sofa were positioned to enjoy the hearth. Floor lamps and side tables provided comfort and invited the family to come in, sit with a good book or work on homework assignments. The family created a comfortable, warm living room/study that better met the needs of its busy family. All rights reserved. Copyright 1999-2005. Written by Decorating Studio,
