When purchasing furniture for a child's room, keep in mind several things. First of all, the bed needs to be sturdy and if he or she has frequent overnight guests, you may want to invest in two twin beds instead of one double or queen. If your budget or the size of the room makes this impossible, consider a trundle bed or an air bed for their guests that is stored underneath the bed when not in use. Your child will also benefit from having a desk and a comfortable chair in their room to do homework and to study. For the remainder of the seating in the room, you may want to consider large oversized floor cushions or pillow. These can be in colorful prints and since children love to sit and play on the floor may make more sense than traditional chairs. Always let your son or daughter help you select the style and finish of the furniture for their room, within reason. If they are old enough, make sure they are aware of the budget you have allowed for the furniture and also point out the practicality or impracticality of a selection. Most children will have a strong opinion of what they want, however, it may change drastically within a few months. Help them to keep a balance in what they select, so that it can adjust to their changing needs as they grown up. Also keep in mind flexibility to their changing needs as they mature. If you purchase second hand painted furniture, make sure it is painted with a lead-free paint for safety. Article written and All Rights owned by Susan Welch Heeney and Decorating Studio, LLC.
