Feather trims and feather fringes are now used for all types of projects, from costumes, to apparel, absolutely beautiful when used feathering sprays of feathers on the bodice and the hem of a dress! White feathers look beautiful on a wedding dress.

How to add Feather fringe to make a Feather Skirt or Feather Dress

All you need to do is select your feather trim. I would make sure that it is a nice thick and full fringe so that your underlining of the skirt or dress doesn't show through. In selecting the underlining fabric - go with a color that is similar to the feathers.

To determine how many yards of feathers you will need, you need to measure the length of the feather fringe. If it is 5" long, you will want each row of feathers to slightly overlap, so each layer would be approximately 4" apart. Next determine the width (around the bust, wait, hips, etc.) of the skirt or dress. Then measure the length of the item your putting the feather fringe on. You will divide the total length by 4" (if your fringe layers are going to be 4" apart.) for instance, if you are making a feather skirt and it is going to be 24" long - just divide 24 by 4 and you will know that you will have 6 rows of feather fringe. Then if the skirt is approximately 36" around. You will need at least 1 yard per row. So that feather skirt would take 6 yards. But, it's always best to buy extra and it would be best in this case to purchase 7 yards.
