Boy's Fantasy Room Decor
Space Ship Room
A child's imagination is an important thing to encourage and their bedroom is a great place to help them stretch it! To create a "Spaceship" theme bedroom, begin by painting all doors and trim in your son's room a white semi-gloss latex paint. Next, paint the ceiling in a rich medium blue (not too dark) in a satin latex, then, paint stars and comets on the ceiling with a star template in a bright yellow paint. If that sounds like too much work, simply apply glow in the dark stars which are available at most toy stores.
The walls can be painted in the same color as the ceiling, with stars and comets applied the same way. If you prefer wallpaper to paint, you can use one of the glow in the dark wallcoverings that have small stars and comets on a background of blue. If you use a wallpaper border, hang it at your son's eye level so that he can easily see and enjoy it. The floor can be carpeted in yellow to match the stars or if you prefer to go more neutral, in a light gray.
If his room has hardwood flooring and you are a do-it-yourself person, paint a floor cloth with a picture of earth from outerspace. Be sure to show North America on the picture of earth and add a big star marking where you live.
Secondhand furniture can be painted in a rich silver-gray shade then "paint" buttons and controls on the headboard and drawer fronts in red, yellow, green and black. Label the pretend buttons and controls with "on", "off", "ignition", "fuel", etc. You can make or purchase stencils with circles and squares that can become control knobs on a pretend instrument panel. Use a bright solid color bedspread in red/orange or if you're really creative, purchase a solid colored bedspread and use fabric paint on it to paint a spaceship. It doesn't matter if you are artistic or not, in fact, you may want to have your child help paint the bedspread. There are several styles of spaceship sheets available to complete his bed.
Windows can be covered in a solid color fabric, such as a light blue or silver-gray with stars painted on them with non-toxic fabric paint. Or purchase silver-gray sheers with the shades underneath for light control. Add a space mobile that you can make together and hang this from his ceiling making sure that all strings and objects on the mobile are well out of his reach.
You certainly don't need to do all of the above in his room to create a fun and playful environment for him. You could easily do just a couple of the above ideas and he will have hours of fun in his spaceship! Remember to make sure that all paint used is non-toxic, lead-free and child-friendly, then ....BLAST OFF!
