Safety in Children's Bathrooms

The bathroom can be a hazardous place, even for adult, but there are many things you can do to make a child's bathroom as child-friendly as possible.

  • Avoid high-gloss, smooth ceramic tile floors which can become very slippery when wet. Adding a latex-backed area rug will help to give a secure footing if you do have slick tiles.
  • Use a nonskid mat or colorful appliqués in the tub, particularly if you have an older tub with a slick enamel finish.
  • Avoid any level changes or steps in the bathroom leading to the tub or toilet. If there are level changes, make sure that they are clearly marked with a brightly colored strip of tile or even tape.
  • Attach a cushioned spout cover in the tub over the water spout. This will prevent your child from hurting their head if they bump the spout and it will also prevent your child from grabbing a hot spout.
  • Make sure your water temperature is not set any higher than 110 degrees or purchase faucets with temperature regulators.
  • Avoid glass in the bathroom when possible, use plastic or paper cups instead.
  • Install a lid lock on the toilet.
  • Add grab bars in the tub or shower.
  • Use safety covers on all outlets and unplug appliances after use. Make sure all outlets in your bathroom are GFI outlets, which will help prevent electrical shock in wet areas by cutting the power to an appliance if it comes in contact with water.
  • Always install childproof locks on medicine and storage cabinets - and do not store any cleaning products out of the child's bathroom.
  • Eliminate the lock on your young child's bathroom door, or keep a towel over the top of the door to prevent your toddler from accidentally locking themselves in the bathroom.

Last, but not least, the most important safety tip of all is to never leave your child alone, even for a second, in the bathroom.
