As far as finishes go, there is no right or wrong choice for your Kitchen cabinets. However, you should take into consideration not only your tastes, but the color of appliances, floor color, wall finishes and countertop finish. Cabinet finishes do follow trends though and lately the hottest finish for Kitchens has been maple. When stains are used on wood, they range greatly in color with light ivory stains and deep rich stains both being very popular. Painted finishes have also gained in popularity including distressed painted finishes that create the look of an Old World kitchen.
When selecting drawers if you use full-extension drawers you will never loose things in the back of a drawer ever again. Another option to look for are cabinets with roll-out shelves. Many cabinets can be retro fitted with roll out shelving without going to the expense of new cabinets. Corner units should always have a Lazy Susan or some type of swivel shelving in them to make use of the back of the cabinet.
When laying out the aisles and passageways in the Kitchen, the space between a kitchen counter and another counter (such as an island) should be at least 42" apart. If two people often cook in the kitchen at the same time, it should be a minimum of 48" apart so that each person can move about freely without disturbing the other.
Within 6' of the sink, the ideal kitchen should have a minimum of 5 linear feet of upper wall cabinet shelving. This means that a wall cabinet that is 12" wide with 5 shelves would supply 5 linear feet of shelving. A wall cabinet that has a width of 18" with 5 shelves, would have 7 1/2 linear feet of shelving.
