Guest Bedroom Decorating & Decor

The guest bedroom can be an important part of the home, even when you don't have guests.
It can easily double as a sewing room, an exercise room, a home office, a library or study.

This Guest Bedroom is very comforting and homey. The addition of throw pillows
on the bed and perhaps a piece of artwork over the headboard would make it even better.

Nontraditional Bed Options

Typically a queen size bed will be the best size to cover most of your needs. However, there are still many options, as listed below:

  • Twin Bed - Although this is ideal for conserving space, unless you only have one guest you will need to provide another sleeping area.
  • Trundle Bed - this is a bed that rolls underneath another bed. When it is not pulled out it is hidden underneath the box spring of the upper bed.
  • Air Mattress - Believe it or not - these are extremely comfortable and can be deflated in minutes and stored in a closet.
  • Sleeper Sofa or Chair - What would we do without these! However, they are not known for their comfort, so you may want to add an additional foam topper to the mattress. A sleeper chair is just like a sofa, except when open, it becomes a twin bed.
  • Futon - similar to a sleeper sofa, but more casual and easier to open up.
  • Day Bed - A day bed can also double as a sofa and pilled high with pillows it can look very comfortable and inviting.
  • Hammock - I wouldn't recommend this for an adult, however, kids think it is an adventure. Simply remove and store in a closet when not needed.
  • Murphy Bed - This is a bed that folds up into a closet or a built-in wall system. It is ideal for a room that has a multipurpose and you would like for the bed to be hidden when it is not in use.

Special Color Scheme

You may want to indulge in a bold color scheme in the Guest Room. Since it isn't a room that you are in all the time, you won't tire of it as easily. (Studies show that the bolder a color is, the quicker we grow tired of it). If you follow the meaning of colors, purple is an ideal color for a guest room because it stands for royalty and pampering (and guests always want to feel pampered). I also like peach in the guest room because it is so flattering to the complexion. Therefore, my ideal guest bedroom is in a color scheme of peach and purple (which are beautiful together!), with touches of green and ivory. Of course, this is my ideal guest room and you will want to choose your own.

Wonderful room but who would want to stay here? All this room needs is a little sprucing
up with home decor, artwork, a nice comforter, other furniture, and a window treatment that can give complete privacy.

Furniture

Depending on whether the Guest Room is only for guests or whether it is going to serve a multiuse purpose, the furniture required will vary. Of course to be used as a guest room, you will need some sort of bed (see list above) regardless of whether it is a traditional bed or not. But, for the occasional guest, the only furniture really necessary is a bed, dresser (empty),mirror, nightstand and a lamp. In most rooms, that leaves quite a bit of floor space for other things. Don't forget to accessorize this room as well. Add home decor, artwork, plants (real or silk), and perhaps some throw pillows on the bed.

Should you also make this room serve another purpose? Think about your hobbies, or work and determine if the Guest Room would be an ideal place for it. Your guests won't mind the exercise equipment or your sewing machine, as long as any messes you have made are cleaned up.

The Guest Bedroom is the ideal place to set up your hobbies, such as this room which
doubles as a sewing room.

Maybe you can get your exercise equipment out of the Living Room and
into a Guest Bedroom!
