Living Room (floorplan below)

As you enter the living room through the front door, a foyer has been created by placing a sofa table (approximately 4' wide x 19" deep) behind the sofa. The sofa table serves as a surface for keys and mail as you walk in, as well as a small decorative lamp for reading while seated on the sofa. To the right in the "foyer area" there is not a piece of furniture but an oversized piece of artwork or mirror hung on the wall. You could go with a very large piece, I have shown the artwork at 4' wide in the layout below. The Living Room is kept simple and the furniture has been moved away from the walls to make the room look larger and to add interest. The sofa drawn is 6' long and 30" deep. The fabric on the sofa is a deep, rich navy with a beige plaid design on it. Any print in navy and beige will work. A coffee table is placed in front of the sofa (approximately 3' wide x 2' deep). Across from the sofa are two lounge chairs (approximately 33" x 33" each) upholstered in a beige fabric, such as a faux silk. Throw pillows in the entire homes color scheme can be used on the sofa and the two chairs to add comfort and pull the colors together. Between the two chairs is (continue below furniture layout)

an Entertainment Center for the television, stereo and VCR. The one I have drawn in is 42" wide x 24" deep. The height can go 5' - 6' tall if you like. All of the Living Room furniture is sitting on an area rug that is approximately 8' x 10' 6" in size. The area rug should have the color scheme in it and can even bring in colors that are not in the scheme as long as they are not the primarily colors you see when looking at the rug. Behind each chair in the corner of the Living Room I have positioned potted trees. If you do not want real trees, the silk trees on the market now are very realistic looking! I would go at least 7' tall with the trees. Underneath each tree is an uplight to shine through the trees leaves. This will create intimate spots of soft light and also add interesting shadows on the ceiling. On the wall opposite the front windows, I have placed two similar (same size and style, but not matching) pieces of artwork. Sizes shown on the layout of the artwork are approximately 2' wide x 4' tall each.

The Living Room floor is done in a Pergo Wood floor and the same floor is carried into the Kitchen. The color for the wood floor would be a little lighter than the Cherry furniture, such as a natural oak. The walls would be painted in either a deep navy, such as Sherwin Williams #SW 0032 Needlepoint Navy or a deep green such as Sherwin Williams #SW 0065 Vogue Green or if you think those color would be too dark, you could paint it in a rich beige, such as Sherwin Williams #SW 0036 Buckram Binding. The trim can either remain natural wood or painted in a soft ivory trim paint throughout the house, such as Sherwin Williams #SW 0046 White Hyacinth. The window treatment should remain simple and also consistent throughout the house for flow. I would either go with wood plantation shutters in an ivory shade or a simple scarf window treatment. I would do the valance scarf in a beige that matches the upholstery on the chairs and the under panels in the same fabric. If you need more privacy in the evening, you can use a shade or blinds in a beige that pull down, but are hidden under the scarf during the day. One long scarf that goes across the double windows would look best.

Kitchen

As you enter the Kitchen, I have placed a 8' long x 2' wide rug runner in the colors of your color scheme. It should not match the rug in the Living Room exactly, but should compliment it and be of a similar style. I have not placed your cupboard against the Laundry Room wall, however, there is enough room to keep it there if you wish. The small dining table in the Kitchen has two chairs pulled up to it but is large enough to pull out 2 more if you need them. The table is approximately 42" x 30" and has a faux beige granite top. The "traffic" passageway between the windows and the table to the garage door is 42" wide. The table located in this position can also serve as a type of "island" for your Kitchen. The tabletop can be Corian or a less expensive alternative would be plastic laminate, similar to Wilsonarts "Neutra Matrix" which looks great with the Buckram Binding paint. The countertops can remain the beige surface that they are now or can be replaced with the same surface you use on the table. The narrow wall space between the countertops and underneath the upper cabinets would look wonderful painted in the deep color of Vogue Green or Needlepoint Navy. Since this will slightly decrease the light under the counter, I would add inexpensive undercabinet lights that are hidden under the cabinets. New hardware on the cabinet doors would spice them up some. The rest of the walls in the Kitchen above the upper cabinets and on the other walls would look nice painted in the Buckram Binding.

Although I have not shown it on your layout, a potted tree situated in the corner of the Kitchen (so that you see it when entering the front door) would add a lot to the room and be enjoyed from the Living Room as well as the Kitchen. The double windows in the Kitchen should reflect the same colors and style of window treatment as you used in the Living Room, however, you may want to make them shorter and have them end at the window sill so that they aren't falling in the traffic pathway. If you need more privacy in the evening, you can use a shade or blinds in a beige that pull down, but are hidden under the scarf during the day. Or you can go with wood plantation shutters

Hallway

The flooring will change from the wood floor in the Kitchen to a beige Berber carpet once you enter the hallway. I would carry the same Buckram Binding paint into the hall to make it appear as light and open as possible. I have shown on the layout two ideal locations for artwork in the hallway. Each of these pieces of artwork are approximately 30" wide and can be of any height. Art in the hallway should be dramatic and make an impact since this is a transitional space and nobody will be viewing the art for any length of time. An important thing to keep in mind is that Bedroom #3's end wall is very visible from the Kitchen and all along the hallway. Because of that I have placed a potted tree with an uplight in Bedroom #3. I will get into this more later when we discuss Bedroom #3.

Laundry

The Laundry Room should have a sheet vinyl floor in a beige that compliments the carpet and the wall color. I would paint the walls in the same Buckram Binding to keep the room as light as possible. Since the Laundry Room door may be left open at times, I have placed a room divider (folding screen) in front of the water heater. I have also indicated an ideal placement for a fold-down ironing board. If you don't already have shelving over the washer and dryer, you should add (white wire shelving is great!) some for storage of cleaning products and misc.

Bathroom

In the bathroom, I would remove the small mirror/medicine cabinet and install a larger mirrored medicine cabinet with a three-fold type of mirror. This will give you more storage and the larger mirror will help the bathroom to look larger by reflecting light. The white tub and toilet can remain, as well as the faux marble vanity top. It would look nice though to paint the base of the vanity in a deep navy, such as Sherwin Williams #SW 0032 "Needlepoint Navy". A matching throw rug in navy (approx. 48" x 24") will look good with the colors in the rest of the house. The walls should be simple and plain to keep the room looking as large and uncluttered as possible. For the walls a soft dusty rose, similar to Sherwin Williams #SW 0003 "Cabbage Rose" would compliment the navy and the rest of the color scheme in the house. The floor should be in the same beige sheet vinyl used in the Laundry Room. Another way to keep the room looking as open and as large as possible would be to replace the shower curtain with sliding clear glass doors. If you do not want to go to that expense, a simple shower curtain in beige to match the floor would look nice. A framed piece of art would look good hung on the wall over the toilet, I would find a piece that is approximately 18" - 2' wide and 2' - 20" high. Towels should be in navy and beige.

Bedroom #2

Bedroom #2 picks up and continues the navy in the bathroom and also adds a rich warm red and softer tint of green. This room has the same Berber carpet as the hallway. The walls would look nice painted in soft green similar to Sherwin Williams #SW 0066 "Cascade Green". Cascade Green looks nice with Vogue Green. This is important, since you want to make sure that the flow of the color scheme in the house works well. A 20" diameter table with a navy table cover would provide a surface for a reading chair placed in the corner. The chair and table in the corner will look nice from the hallway and provide a comfortable reading place in the room. In front of the window is a small potted plant, again a silk plant would look nice if you prefer. To the right of the window is a dresser (approximately 30" wide x 20" deep). This dresser can be four drawers high to provide plenty of storage. A twin bed is placed with its headboard against the hallway wall. A piece of artwork would work on the wall over the headboard. Between the bed and wall is a very small table that can hold a small light and beverages. The table is drawn in at approximately 12" x 12". A bedspread in a print with warm red, navy and the soft green will pull all the colors together. A throw pillow on the bed in navy will complete the room. The window treatment should be in the same style as the other windows, but possibly in another color. If you need more privacy in the evening, you can use a shade or blinds in a beige that pull down, but are hidden under the scarf during the day. Or you can go with wood plantation shutters in ivory.

Bedroom #1

Bedroom #1 has the same Berber carpet as the hall and bedroom #3. This room has been kept mostly neutral and relaxing. The walls would look great painted in the Buckram Binding or in a beige close to the carpet. The bedspread is in a solid color a little darker beige than the walls with beige and hunter green throw pillows on it. The queen size bed has a night stand on each side with a small side lamps for reading in bed. At the foot of the bed is a blanket chest (approximately 36" wide x 18" deep). Or you could use a bench at the foot of the bed if you would like. A dresser (2 drawers high only) is placed underneath the window. The dresser is approximately 42" w x 21" deep. A small slipper chair is placed outside of the closet for putting on shoes, etc. Next to the chair is a wall mounted full length mirror. The window treatment in here should be the same scarf valance as the Living Room and should be in a light beige or a deep beige to match the bedspread. If you need more privacy in the evening, you can use a shade or blinds in a beige that pull down, but are hidden under the scarf during the day. Or you can go with wood plantation shutters in ivory or beige.

Bedroom #3

Bedroom #3 should look like an extension of the hallway when you are walking down the hallway. This will make the house look larger. The walls should be painted in the same color as the hall and the Berber carpet should continue into the Bedroom to add to the illusion of more space. In the corner or the bedroom that you see from the hallway I have placed a tall potted tree with an uplight underneath. I have placed a twin bed in this room, although a double would work and even a queen (but a queen would be much tighter). To the left of the bed is a desk for the computer. The desk is 48" wide and 24" deep with a small desk chair. Tucked behind the closet door is a 4 drawer high dresser that is 30" wide. Next to the closet is a small bench for sitting while dressing. The window treatment in here should be the same scarf valance as the Living Room and should be in a light beige or a deep beige to match the bedspread. If you need more privacy in the evening, you can use a shade or blinds in a beige that pull down, but are hidden under the scarf during the day. Or you can go with wood plantation shutters.
