Q: We are about to begin a major renovation job in our Master Bedroom & Bath. I want to create a peaceful and relaxing place to unwind, but I'm not sure what colors I should use or where to use them to achieve the best result. What color should I select for the carpet in the bedroom, and what colors should I use in the bathroom to pull the two rooms together?

A: Colors that can create a feeling of calm are typically light in value (pale) and are muted instead of vivid. Almost any color can create a tranquil effect if you select it in a light tint, however, blue is quite often used for its soothing effects. In order to create a restful room you will want to keep the color scheme and patterns simple. Therefore, it is best to select only one color and use it with shades of ivory, beige, and/or white. You will also want to avoid combining your soft, tranquil color with shades of gray, simply because most grays tend to be cold and uninviting. In this article, we will explore using shades of blue in the Master Suite, but If you prefer not to use blue, you can go with a soft sage green, a muted rose, or just about any color in a light "barely there" tint and combine it with your shades of white and ivory.

One of the best ways to create harmony in a room is to create a space with flowing and unbroken lines. Therefore, I would suggest that the walls and carpeting be similar in color. This will also make the room appear larger. If you choose blue, white, ivory or soft beige for your master suite you can apply some of the following tips to create the room of your dreams.

In The Bedroom

The carpeting and walls should be in a soft shade of beige, dark enough to hide soil and marks, but light enough to create the feeling of airiness. Instead of white, the ceiling should be painted a slightly lighter shade of beige than the walls, or painted in a very pale tint of blue. If the ceiling is painted blue, you can even add billowing while faux clouds! Ceiling light fixtures should be on a dimmer so that you have the option of softening the harsh light they tend to emit. The trim on windows, doors, and around the base of the room should be painted in ivory or stained in a light dolor. The bedroom furniture can be in a light wood or painted in shades of ivory and beige. Add potted plants to bring the peaceful feeling of nature into your room. Adding a small uplight underneath the plant will create wonderful and interesting shadows on the ceiling in the evening.

It is best for the fabric in the window treatment to be similar to the color used on the walls. This continues the unbroken and restful feeling that you are trying to create in the room.

The bed can become the main area where you will use the soft blue. The bedspread would look best in an uncluttered and soothing pattern that incorporates blues with shades of ivory and beige. Add plenty of throw pillows to the bed in other colors that are found in the bedspread.

In the Bathroom

As you move into the bathroom, there should be a feeling of soft transition between the two rooms. The flooring would look best in a tile or vinyl that is similar in color to the beige carpet used in the bedroom. Again, this helps to create an unbroken line!

The walls should be painted in the same color as the walls in the bedroom. If you prefer to hand wallpaper in the bath, go with a beige tone on tone that is similar in color to the bedroom wall paint. Don't forget to add artwork in the bathroom. Hanging your favorite painting or print will immediately make the room more inviting.

The colors selected for all bath fixtures (the toilet, sink, tub, etc.) should match. I personally prefer these items in traditional white or ivory. White or ivory always looks clean, even if you have hard water, and you can always change the color scheme of the bathroom in the future without worrying about having to match colored bath fixtures.

Towels and bath mats would look stunning in this room in an ivory and or light blue. If you have a window in your bath, either use the same fabric as in the bedroom or go with a color that matches the towels and bath mat. When selecting other decorative accessories for the bath, select items in different shades of the same colors you have already used in the room. This will keep the color scheme from becoming boring.

The overhead lights in the bathroom should also be on a dimmer. This will enable you to have the light required for the task at hand, whether it is applying make-up, reading or relaxing in the tub.
