Keep It Simple This Holiday Season
Interior Designers Give Their Advice on Decorating Your Guest Bath

holiday decorating(ARA) - With the holiday season right around the corner, are you scrambling to come up with new decorating ideas? Don’t just focus on the traditional areas of the home. Think beyond a tree in the family room, a new tablecloth in the kitchen and the boughs of garland and lights on the stairway banister. Creatively decorate the one room that everyone is sure to visit, the bathroom.

“We all go to great lengths to give our homes a fresh look for the holidays, but the one room that gets the most traffic typically receives the least attention,” said Tim Bitterman, senior product/ brand manager for Inspirations by Moen. “Impress your guests with unexpected charm and festive details.”

Simple and Sophisticated

And by details, keep in mind that too much Santa may not be a good thing. According to interior designer Chris Barrett from the HGTV series, Homes Across America, “It’s the simple things that will make your bathroom beautiful. Steer clear of Santa Claus bath mats and reindeer shower curtains which can look too forced and child-like.” Instead she recommends decorating with seasonal flowers. “They don’t even have to be big Christmas poinsettias. A simple vase with a few red roses and a sprig of pine would have the perfect understated effect,” she added.

Hang It Up

Another suggestion Barrett makes for your holiday bathroom makeover is to change the art on your walls. “Vintage Christmas carol sheet music makes for a great look when mounted in a thin black or even green and red picture frame.” Consider using inexpensive frames to showcase beautiful holiday cards or old- fashioned, festive post cards and create a colorful theme that carries throughout the home.

Accessorize

One of the quickest and most simple ways to update your bathroom for any season is to replace your bathroom accessories. “Just updating your accessories can transform your bathroom,” says Jone Pence, interior designer, Jone Pence Interior Design and Construction. Consider the new Retreat Collection from Inspirations by Moen. Featuring a simple, traditional design with a curved, hourglass-like silhouette, these coordinating accessories add a touch of architectural sophistication to the bath. Available at Lowe’s nationwide in a brushed nickel, or a warm oil rubbed bronze finish, the eye-catching collection includes a pivoting paper holder, towel ring, towel bars, matching tank lever and decorative glass shelf.

Festive Details

Complete the look with holiday hand towels. “You could also add a glass bowl to the counter and fill it with colorful potpourri, ornaments or golden pine cones for just the right touch,” Pence added. Consider purchasing a number of white or ivory candles in a range of sizes and add a warm glow to the room.

Don’t overlook that unused corner on the floor. Wrap an assortment of small and medium-sized boxes in coordinating wrapping paper. Attach ribbons or bows and pile the boxes on the floor for festive charm.

Although the bathroom is not the first place you think of when it comes to decorating for the holiday season, it is the one room that your guests are sure to visit. With just a few simple decorations, and a few new accessories it may also be the room your guests remember most.
