A Fairy Kingdom For A Girls Fantasy Room

The following Fairy fantasy bedroom is inexpensive and can easily be transformed in a few years, as your daughter outgrows this look, by repainting the walls and changing the window treatments and bedspread.

For the "fairest one of all" apply a faux paint treatment, which should be soft and create the feeling of a magical kingdom. Begin by painting all doors and trim in your daughter's room in a soft ivory semi-gloss latex paint. Disney® makes a line of paint that would be ideal for her room and their color "100 Acre Snowfall" would be a perfect shade for the trim and the ceiling in a pale sky blue, similar to Disney's® "Spring Song".

The bottom 2 feet of the walls should be painted in a pretty grass green color, similar to Disney's® "100 Acre Spring" and the walls from the green section up should be painted in the same sky blue color as the ceiling. Try to soften and smudge the edge where the green and blue meet (at about 2 feet above the floor) with a sponge while the blue paint is still damp. After the walls have dried, use a glaze in the same color as the ivory trim in the room to make a transparent haze over the entire wall. The secret here is to go lightly with the ivory glaze and to not "hide" the green and blue base coat. Carry the ivory glaze over the blue ceiling as well. Once you have done this you should have a room that wraps you up and makes you feel that you are outside surrounded by grass and sky. You can then paint flowers and distant castles to the "grass" areas of the wall. This really doesn't require much artistic talent, just keep the castles small and far away so that you won't have to paint too many details on them. One effect that is very simple, but looks incredible, is to paint a rainbow in varying colors that travels from the grass and arcs up the wall, across the ceiling and down the wall on the other side of the room, until it meets the grass again. Once the rainbow dries, apply a coat of transparent glitter paint available from Benjamin Moore. The glitter paint, CRAYOLA¨ Glitter F/X Finish, will add an iridescent sparkle to the rainbow. Complete the rainbow by adding a "pot of gold" at one end.

The floor should be carpeted in pale green to match the "grass" painted on the bottom of the wall, but don't select the color of green carpet until after you have completed the ivory glaze! The glaze will lighten and change the color of the green paint and the carpet should be selected only after the wall treatment has been completed and you know the final shade of green on the walls.

Keep the window treatments very soft and wispy. They would look great in ivory sheers with magic wands and stars painted on them in non-toxic fabric paint. Use soft pastel paint colors and a light hand (very little paint on the brush) when painting the decorations on the sheers. Another option would be to purchase sheers in ivory and use fabric dyes in green and blue to match the walls. Hang the sheers before dying and mark on them where the green on the grass changes into the blue of the ceiling. After marking the spot, dip the bottom of the sheers into a sink of very pale green (you will probably need to make the dye solution more diluted than the directions recommend to obtain a pale color) to match the grass only to the point you have marked on the sheers. Once the green on the bottom of the sheers is dry, dip the tops into pale blue dye to match the top of the walls and the ceiling. Install ivory pull-down shades underneath the sheers to give her room privacy and light control.

Her furniture would look nice in a light wood or paint finish, however any style or finish of furniture would be fine. You can create the look of feminine French Provincial furniture by painting older furniture in ivory and adding touches of gold paint to the edges. The bedspread can be of any style or color that you and your daughter like, but keep the colors within the soft pastels that are used in the room already. Remember, that all paint and finishes used in the room should be non-toxic, flame retardant and easily cleaned!
