The screen in the far corner of this room, as
well as the potted tree in the other, make this Bedroom
much cozier by softening the hard corners of the room. This also follows the
Feng Shui belief of eliminating
and hiding the corners in rooms. The seating in the room provides a sitting
area separate from the sleeping area - perfect
place to enjoy a cup of tea!
Bedroom Dimensions
In order to function well in a space,
there are certain minimum requirements that should be met. Below
are a few dimensions which may come in handy as you layout your
Bedroom.
- 3' - 4' of open space is needed in front of a
dresser or chest of drawers.
- You should allow at least 1'6" - 2' on each
side of a bed to allow for getting in/out and also making up
the bed.
- There should be a minimum of 2' - 2'6" between
twin beds.
- If you have a chair in the Bedroom, there should
be at least 18" - 24" of open space in front of it
for the legs.
- Main traffic paths through the bedroom should
be at least 30" wide.
- The following are standard mattress sizes, the
addition of a bed frame that extends beyond the mattress will
increase the actual amount of floor space that the bed will
take up.
Bunk - 38" x 74"
Twin 39" x 75"
Twin Extra Long - 39" x 80"
Full - 54" x 75"
Queen - 60" x 80"
King - 76"/78" x 80"/84"

The open ceiling, large windows and light
color scheme in this Master Bedroom help to give the illusion
of even more space than there is - although it is already a large room.
The open ceiling may be something
that can be included in your Bedroom renovation if there is attic space
above. Ask the contractor to see if there
are any obstructions in your attic above the bedroom - if not, with some
bracing and new supports the contractor
may be able to open up your room some. The
light colored dresser and sofa also give the feeling of more space.
The drop length of the dust
ruffle on the bed above is an extra long length and is sometimes
available in stores. You may want to have a custom dust
ruffle made to allow you to have the length and fabric you
want. The rust pillows on the ivory sofa help to pull the
light colored end of the room into the rest of the room.
If the rust pillows were not there, that end of the bedroom
would seem disconnected to the rest. Once again, you have
the crucial reading lamps on each side of the bed.
- Standard Drop Lengths for Bed Linens. These are standards
that are usually available ready made. If you need an unusual
size, you may be able to find it ready made or you may want to
consider having the bed linen custom made.
Comforter or Duvet - Drops 12" from side of bed
Bedspread - Drops 21" from side of bed
Dust Ruffle - Drops 14" from the top of box spring
- Mattresses Topper Options:
Feather Mattress - Soft sided mattress to place on top
of actual mattress - filled with down, feathers or synthetic
fibers.
Air Mattress - Place on top of mattress and adjust the amount
of air in the Air Mattress to make soft or firm.
- Other Bed Options - Some of these may be appropriate
for the Master Bedroom, but not all of them are ideally comfortable
- such as the sofa bed!
Water Bed - Platform holds the mattress which is filled
with water. Make sure that your floor or foundation is strong
enough to support the additional weight of a water bed.
Murphy Bed - folds up into the wall, closet or storage built-in
so that it is completely out of view unless it is pulled down.
Loft-Style Bed - possible if the Bedroom has high enough ceilings
to have the bed at higher level than the floor.
Sunken Bed - If your not sure what this is, just remember
the James Bond movies from the 60's!
Futon - Nice looking and easily converted from sofa to bed.
Sofa Sleeper - Similar to the futon except in a traditional
sofa form.
I just HAD to throw this photo in! Notice
the room and ignore the colors - if you can. The side tables
are actually very
unique - they are made from porcelain urns with round glass tops on them.
The carpet is really wonderful - I love floral carpets, they remind me
of an old comfy hotel in Ireland. The columns are a great idea if you can
sacrifice the space - they frame the bed area and make the space much more
dramatic. Another thing I do love about this room is the sheer organza
bedspread. Wonderful, but I think I would like mine in ivory please.
Closets
There are wonderful systems that
you can put in your closet yourself or you can hire someone
to come and design the perfect system and install it for you.
Most older homes do not have enough closet space, but by adding
shelving and rearranging, you can make more of the space you
do have. Options for enlarging your closet generally involve
a contractor, but it is certainly something worth looking
into if you have a room next to your Master Bedroom that could
be utilized.
The average person needs at least
5 linear feet of hanging closet space. This means that a Master
Bedroom closet that is storing clothing for 2 people, should
be a total of 10'.
