Fragrances For Your Home - From The Kitchen We have already indulged our sense of sight by creating a visual environment in our homes that is warm and welcoming. Now, take your decorating one step further and pamper your sense of smell. You can always buy evergreen, cinnamon and orange potpourri at the store and distribute in small ornamental bowls around your home, however you can also create enticing scents for your home yourself. Here are some fun and easy projects that will send forth wonderful scents throughout your home. GrandmaÕs Kitchen: The name comes from the fact that once this concoction is simmering, your home will be filled with the aroma of treats baking in the kitchen. Simply combine the following spices from your kitchen in a quart of water: 4 tablespoons of cinnamon, 3 tablespoons of cloves and 1- 1/2 tablespoons each of ginger and nutmeg. If you like, also stir in a few cinnamon sticks. You can simmer in a Potpourri simmer pot, or on the lowest heat setting on your back stove burner. If you use only the dry ingredients, you can place them on aluminum foil in a slightly warm oven. Orange & Lemon Bake: Another easy way to add to the ambiance of your home is to take 2 oranges, 1 lemon, 2 cinnamon sticks, 3 bay leaves, 2 tablespoons allspice (whole) and 2 tablespoons cloves (whole). Carefully peel small sections of the peel off of the oranges and lemon. Place all ingredients on aluminum foil in a warm oven or add to water and simmer over low heat. Old Fashioned Orange Pomander: I love to hang these around the house (out of children's reach!). Purchase whole cloves, orris root powder, cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg and some oranges. Insert the stem part of the cloves all over the orange, leaving about 1/8th of an inch between each clove to allow for shrinkage of the orange. Combine 2 parts of orris root powder, 1 part cinnamon, 1/2 part allspice and nutmeg and pour powder mixture into a shoe box, add the orange, cover, gently shake the box to allow the powder to cover the orange and cloves, then place on top of the refrigerator. After 2 - 3 lessons, remove the orange and shake off any excess powder. Insert a short florist wire in the top of the orange and add a ribbon for hanging. The powder left over in the shoe box can be saved and used again later. Now, sit back and enjoy the sights and aromas of your home.
